UV Resistant Resins Make Solar a Better Alternative

Low-Weight, Low-Wear for Moving Parts
DuPont engineering polymers for the photovoltaic sector include low-wear/low-friction DuPont™ Delrin® acetal resin, which is being used for Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) bearings. These bearings help curved mirrors follow the sun throughout the day, and replace metal bearings.
Making Photovoltaics Practical
DuPont also offers two specific grades of DuPontTM Rynite® PET UV resistant resins for photovoltaic applications. They offer a high degree of stiffness for lightweight structural strength. They also offer excellent resistance to ultraviolet rays, heat, wind and significant loads of snow, while providing a high surface finish.
These Rynite® resins have another important characteristic: they are designed to help support reduced total cost of manufacturing, assembling and installation, which can help the photovoltaic industry reach grid parity faster.
Matching Polymers and Projects
DuPont UV resistant resin choices give DuPont application resources more ways to work with photovoltaic manufacturers to help them specify the best material for their design and manufacturing method needs. For example, Rynite® 935SUV is a 35% glass-fiber/mineral reinforced, UV stabilized grade of polyethylene terephtalate (PET) suitable for injection molding, and Rynite® 540SUV is a 40% glass-fiber reinforced, UV stabilized grade of PET suitable for extrusion and injection molding. Both grades combine high stiffness with low warpage and have been specifically developed for long-term outdoor applications, such as frames in solar panels.
Meeting Component Requirements
A special, flame-retardant grade of DuPont™ Zytel® PA66/6 copolymer was used to produce an inverter module cover for a photovoltaic system (replacing what had been a metal cover). With a CTI value (CTI = Comparative Tracking Index) of 325 V, a GWFI value (GWFI = Glow Wire Flammability Index) of 960 °C and classified with the UL94 V-0 flammability standard, the Zytel® cover meets property requirements. The material’s low tendency for warpage or shrinkage during injection molding, combined with structural enhancements such as reinforcing ribs, enable compliance with even very tight manufacturing tolerances. This helps support a high accuracy of fit with the other housing section made of cast aluminum. Moreover, the use of Zytel® provides a high surface quality for the visible component.
