Creating Mentally Healthy Workplaces

The World Health Organisation defines mental health as, “a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.

Every year one in five Australians will experience a mental health condition, with anxiety and depression being the most common. The incidence of mental health disorders is similar worldwide. Given the prominence of mental health conditions in the population and their impact on work productivity, participation and compensation claims, it is important for workplaces to take steps toward creating mentally healthy environments.

In recent years there has been increasing recognition of the need to incorporate broader psychosocial considerations in workplace health initiatives. Despite legislation in Australia and internationally encouraging organisations to address psychosocial risks that can lead to workplace stress and mental disorders, this is still an area in need of development. Businesses need to understand the organisational, financial and social benefits of providing psychologically safe environments in order to be compelled to take action.

As employees spend half of their waking hours and 25 percent of their total time at work, the workplace is the ideal environment to support and promote physical and mental health, but are we doing enough?
